What is Digital Literacy?

This Essential Skill covers the topics below, which will be taught within the skills sessions:

  • Researching information online 

  • Choosing the right software tools to support creation and innovation 

  • Communication, participation and collaboration 

  • Digital footprint and the security of information 

  • Organising digital information

You might already feel confident in some of these subject areas, but our sessions will ensure you have all the required skills that you need to achieve the qualification, as well as providing you with useful digital skills for your day-to-day life. You will undertake two assessments to achieve this qualification; a controlled task assessment where you will be given a scenario to apply your digital literacy skills, followed by a structured discussion once the controlled task has been passed. Below, you can choose from two options for gaining these skills and achieving your qualification. Please read through the options in full, to ensure that you are picking the right one to meet your needs.. You also have the option to complete this qualification in Welsh if you wish. Your WEST initial assessments level, plus the short digital literacy checker you may have been asked to complete, will help determine which sessions are best for you. Please select the level you will be completing below.

Level 1

If your WEST initial assessment and survey results came out at Entry Level 3 or Level 1 then these sessions may suit you. 

 

If your WEST initial assessment result comes out at Entry 2 or below then please click here to discuss your needs with the Essential Skills team.   

 

You have the option to achieve this qualification, online via Microsoft Teams and in our training centre at Ocean Park House, Cardiff, across three days

  

Day 1 - A half a day to review all qualification knowledge and to prepare for the controlled task and discussion assessments - This can be completed either online via Microsoft teams or in person at our Cardiff centre.

 

Day 2 – A full day to complete the controlled task - This can be completed either online via Microsoft teams or in person at our Cardiff centre.

 

Day 3 – A ten-minute structured discussion with an Essential Skills tutor on an one-to-one basis. The whole meeting will last no longer than 45 minutes. This is completed online via Microsoft Teams. - This session should be booked for 2 weeks after your Day 2 session.

YOU MUST BOOK ON TO ALL 3 DAYS TO ACHIEVE THIS QUALIFICATION.

Level 2

If your WEST initial assessment and survey results came out at Level 1 or Level 2, then these sessions may suit you. 

 

If your WEST initial assessment result comes out at Entry 3 or below, then you may benefit from attending the Level 1 sessions above. If you have any further concerns or would like to discuss your needs with the Essential Skills team, please click here.

 

You have the option to achieve this qualification, online via Microsoft Teams and in our training centre at Ocean Park House, Cardiff, across three days.

Working from Home
Students in Computer Class

Level 3

ACT offer the Digital Literacy Essential Skill at level 3, for our advanced IT learners. If your WEST initial assessment and survey results came out at Level 2 or Level 3, then these sessions may suit you. 

 

You have the option to achieve this qualification, online via Microsoft Teams and in our training centre at Ocean Park House, Cardiff, across four days

  

Day 1 - A full day to review all qualification knowledge and to prepare for the controlled task and discussion assessments - This can be completed either online via Microsoft teams or in person at our Cardiff centre.

 

Day 2 and 3 – 8 hours across 2 days to complete the controlled task - This can be completed either online via Microsoft teams or in person at our Cardiff centre. 

 

Day 4 – A ten-minute structured discussion with an Essential Skills tutor on an one-to-one basis. The whole meeting will last no longer than 45 minutes. This is completed online via Microsoft Teams. - This session should be booked for 2 weeks after your Day 3 session.

YOU MUST BOOK ON TO ALL 4 DAYS TO ACHIEVE THIS QUALIFICATION.

Twilight Sessions

These online sessions take place in the evening at 18:00pm - 20:00pm.

​

As these are shorter sessions, the controlled task is split over 3 days.

​

Day 1 - A 2 hour session to review all qualification knowledge and to prepare for the controlled task and discussion assessments - This must be booked before Day 2.

​

Day 2,3 & 4 - 5 hours across 3 days to complete the controlled task - These are booked as a cohort.

​

Day 5A ten-minute structured discussion with an Essential Skills tutor on an one-to-one basis. The whole meeting will last no longer than 45 minutes. - This session should be booked for 2 weeks after your Day 4 session.

 

All 5 Days must be booked to achieve this qualification.

Hair and Beauty Sessions

These Essential Skill sessions are exclusively for Hair and Beauty learners.

These Digital Literacy sessions will consist of the Preparation, Controlled Task and Structured Discussion across two days.
